Everything Is an Operating System Now
The term “OS” has escaped the computer.
This week, Cloudflare - a technology company - launched Cloudflare OS. It is one of many recent products, companies, and projects with “OS” tacked onto the end of the name.
Not an operating system for your laptop. An AI workspace built around how an entire company works: its knowledge, procedures, tools, systems, and people [3].
And Cloudflare is hardly alone.
Search Product Hunt and you will find a history of all kinds of “OS” named things - LifeOS, Student OS, Ishi Executive OS, an AI Sales OS, an agentic Marketing OS, and even an AI-native operating system for founders [4][5][6][7][8][9]. These are just some random samples - I could go on.
But this is not just about technology.
The Cloudflare OS announcement is a bit overly technical, and not as easy to understand, but the trend of calling everything an “OS” is real, so let’s translate.
Something is happening to the term operating system.
Ma, the words are not wording!
Per the dictionary (and Wikipedia), an operating system (n.) means: the low-level software that supports a computer’s basic functions [1]. Windows, macOS, and Linux are operating systems. They provide the underlying environment upon which everything else runs.
But then, non-technical people have long used a similar idea more broadly. We talk about standard operating procedures, systems of working, and simply “the way we do things.”
Those once felt like two different meanings. But it’s finally happening as humans and computers come even closer together. Now those meanings are merging and overlapping.
“Digital transformation” was the precursor, and it’s still going on, but we are past the initial phases. The ubiquity of technology, and rapid increase in accessibility to all humans, especially thanks recently to AI/LLMs, has changed the equation.
Organizations (and people) have always depended on information systems, even before those systems were computerized. AI and large language models are making those systems more accessible, adaptable, and increasingly buildable by ordinary people all over the world.
A company can build an operating system for how it works. An organization can build one for how it serves people. An individual can build one for how they think, organize, decide, and act.
Technologists have long understood that people and technology do not really operate separately. Together, they form sociotechnical systems: systems in which the human and technical parts shape one another [2].
What is different now is that many more people can see this - and participate in building it.
Be free, little OS
An operating system is no longer only the software underneath a computer.
Increasingly, it is the combination of the human and the technology, the fused underlying system through which a person, team, company, or organization operates.
Everything is becoming an operating system.
And we are all becoming operating-system designers.

I want to be clear. I am an advocate for human beings, not a technology wonk. I spent too much of my life in tech because it was my job, but I really do care about the intersection of society and technology, and people outside of technology.
I say this because lately I have been writing a lot about AI especially, but that is not because I want you to believe it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread (sliced bread… not always so great either)…
My goal is to help us understand what’s happening, have some fun experimenting and sharing what I know, but more importantly, try to figure out how to enable and empower more humans.
As I move forward, more writing will come that will explain the place where I am currently spending most of my time, and while technology is part of it, technology belongs only in service of people.
